Chapter 1 in leadership guru John Maxwell’s iconic book, “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” is entitled “The Law of the Lid”. Maxwell states that our leadership ability is the lid on our potential – it is our leadership ability that will define our potential achievements and influence.

The idea is, of course, to really interrogate one’s leadership ability, and particularly, how it can be improved. As Maxwell puts it, “To reach the highest level of effectiveness, you have to raise the lid – one way or another.” Hard work and commitment, without leadership ability, can only result in limited effectiveness and influence.

For me, the biggest realization I had to make two decades ago, when I first read this book, was that my social effectiveness was poor – my communication skill levels and confidence were low, and I just wasn’t making any level of impact.

I joined Toastmasters International – an incredible organization that has been pivotal to my communication confidence journey. Twenty years later, I teach communication confidence. I’m passionate about sharing the lid-lifting ability of communication.

What is the lid on your leadership ability ? What are you going to do to lift that lid ? (I recommend that you start by reading “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”!)
